Ellen was born in 1850 in Lismoyle, Tamlaght O'Crilly Pa., Co. Londonderry, Ireland and her baptism took place on September 6th, 1850 in Boveedy Presbyterian Church.1  Ellen's father was John McIlfatrick and her mother was Jane Stewart.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert "The Isles" Stewart and Jane McIlfatrick.  She had five brothers named Allen, Jane, William, Stewart and James.  She was the youngest of the six children.
