Thomas McCaughrin

Thomas was born in February 1805 in Gorton Coolhill, Aghadowey Parish, Co. Londonderry, Ireland. Thomas' father was Andrew McCaughrin and his mother was Nancy Stewart. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Stewart and Unknown Irwin. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Daniel, James, John, Andrew, Samuel, Martha and Mary. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 58 in 1863 in Newberry, South Carolina.

General Notes
- Thomas McCaughrin married Letitia Lusk in Ireland. Her family objected to the marriage so they eloped from a party. One sister never spoke to her again even when she left for the U.S.A. The Lusk sisters had a reputation for beauty and one was a noted singer - Oral History

  Martha McCaughrin remembers Thomas telling about sitting on his grandfather's lap and hearing stories of the terrible Siege of Londonderry in 1689.
  
  Fanny McCaughrin of Newberry, SC, daughter of Robert Lusk McCaughrin, recalled that "the Lusks were gentry and the McCaughrins were planters. The social lines were so firmly drawn that the Lusks were better off than the McCaughrins. Our grandfather [Thomas] so I have heard from talk in the family, was educated for a Presbyterian Minister, but never went to the ministry. Cousin Annie Hunt used to tell us how fond she was of him.
