  • Mary and Martha McCaughrin were twins.  Martha died young.

    The spelling of McCaughrin appears in various ways on the baptism records of her children.  They are:  McCaheren, McCaughern, McAughern, and McAugher.  Sarah Jane Stewart spelled it McCaughan.  On the land records of her father and brother in Aghadowey Parish it is spelled McCaughrin and that is how it is spelled on records in the USA.
    
    
    MEMOIR
    
    The following is a memoir of the McCaughrins and Lusks written by Mary McCaughrin's niece Martha McCaughrin, daughter of Thomas and Letitia Lusk McCaughrin.

        In my young days, I was at Caesar's Head one summer.  Among the guests was General Waddly Thompson.  He was very congenial, and we became great friends.  One evening, when the parlor was full of people, he asked each one, of what descent they were.  When he came to me, I said "Scotch-Irish".  He replied with emphasis "The best blood in the world, the best blood in the world.  John Calhoun was Scotch- Irish!"
        Our family on both sides runs back to Scotland, to the days of the persecutions, and martyrs.  Some of them gave their lives for the faith.  The McCaughrins sought refuge in Ireland before the great Siege of London derry.  It is more than 200 years ago.  You will find an account of it in Macaulay's History of England.  It is near the first part of the book.  My father said as a little boy he used to sit on his grandfather's knee and listen to stories of that terrible Siege.  I do not know his name nor any of his family, except his son Andrew, who was my fathers' father.  His name was Andrew.  He married Nancy Stuart, and they reared a family of six sons, and two daughters, Thomas, my father being the eldest.  He was born in Feb. 1805.  He married Letitia LUSK.  They took the spirit of emigration and in 1833 came to S.C. with two little children, Nancy, born 28th Dec. 1828, and Martha, June 16th, 1831.  They first went to Chester Co. by advice of friends and lived there several years.  Two children were added to them there.  Robert Lusk, on Sept. 1st, 1834, and Susan Elizabeth on 28th May, 1837.  He tried to farm but knew nothing about it and utterly failed.  Then he thought school and was called upon to do the writing and reading at every meeting, such as clerk for the "Squire" or Magistrate in his Court business.  From there they moved to Columbia where he got congenial employment.  Two more children were added to the family, Andrew Jackson on 4th Oct., 1840 and Samuel Thomas on 19th May, 1843.  Later on they moved to Charleston, where he and Andrew, who only a boy, did a successful Brokerage business.  Robert has gone before with his Uncle Samuel McCaughrin, who kept the books, and was in the office of Messrs. Kennedy and Crawford, who had just moved from Columbia.  Yellow Fever prevailed  in 1854, and all the family had to leave the city.  In the course of two or three years they moved to Newberry.  Robert was made Cashier of the New Bank before he was 21 years old. D.D. Boyd was president.  After some years, he resigned because he was tired of being confined to a salary.  He and Mr. J. B. Carwile formed a co-partnership and opened a general merchandise at the old Agnew Corner.  Andrew was chief clerk for them, and they were very successful.  Thus they were; when Andrew volunteered at once the partners closed out, and Robert went to the army.  Mr. Carvile, on account of ill health never joined the army.  Sammy was in Newberry College, and had to wait until he was 17 years old to be taken.  In the meantime, Robert had married Anna Kirkpatrick, and she with one child, Mamie, stayed part  of the time at her fathers at Davidson College.
        I must go back to Letitia, your grandmother, who was the daughter of Robert Lusk and Nancy McAteer (sic).  Her father came from Scotland to Ireland, when he was about 12 years old, on the death of his parents.  He lived with relatives and in time married and reared a family of 7 daughters and three sons.  He had 5 farms, stocked well, a good two story stone house and kept hired men and hired women.  He was also an Architect of great skill and built a noted Catholic Cathedral, which was visited by strangers and tourists.  He died about the age of 62.
