Martha was born in 1825 in Lismoyle, Tamlaght O'Crilly Pa., Co. Londonderry, Ireland.  Martha's father was Robert McAleese and her mother was Mary Stewart.  She had two brothers and four sisters, named Stewart, Daniel, Margaret, Jane, Mary  and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
