Martha was born about 1822 in Drumfad, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland and her baptism took place on September 15th, 1822 in Taughboyne Parish Church. Martha's father was Hugh (Drumfad) Lowry and her mother was Mary Barr.  Her paternal grandparents were James (Drumfad) Lowry and <Unknown>.  She had five half-brothers and five half-sisters, named James, Alexander, Leighton, Robert, Hugh, Eliza Jane, Anne, Catherine, Rebecca and Margaret.
