Leighton was born in 1844 in Drumfad, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland.  Leighton's father was Hugh (Drumfad) Lowry and his mother was Catherine Warnock.  His paternal grandparents were James (Drumfad) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Alexander, Eliza Jane, Anne, Catherine and Rebecca.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Robert, Hugh, Margaret and Martha.  He died at the age of 52 in 1896 in West Derby, Lancashire, England.
