James was born in 1847 in Drumfad, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland and his baptism took place on April 30th, 1847 in 1st Raphoe Presbyterian Church.  James' father was John (Drumfad) Lowry and his mother was Jane Logan.  He had three brothers and a sister, named Robert, Andrew, Thomas and Isabella.  He was the youngest of the five children.
