Hugh was born about 1820 in Drumfad, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland and his baptism took place on December 24th, 1820 in Taughboyne Parish Church.  Hugh's father was Hugh (Drumfad) Lowry and his mother was Sarah McClintock.  His paternal grandparents were James (Drumfad) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had four half-brothers and six half-sisters, named James, Alexander, Leighton, Robert, Eliza Jane, Anne, Catherine, Rebecca, Margaret and Martha.
