  • The Londonderry Standard of 12th Sept 1882 says, "Sept 8th, at Drumcrow, Henry A Lowry, aged 68 years".  All three Derry papers say 68, but Wendy has sent his death cert and it defo says 58.

    Henry Alexander Lowry's will was signed on the 3rd day of June 1882 and probated the 16th day of Octr. 1882 in the Co. of Donegal.  It includes two codicils.  Henry left his Drumcrow farm to his sons Henry, who was in Australia, and Andrew, at home, to be shared.  It included legacies to be paid to his son James, his daughter Harriett, and his wife Mary.  The first codicil signed on the 16th day of June 1882 left the farm to Henry with a legacy to be paid to Andrew including lodging until he was 21 yrs of age and a subsequent legacy after that.  The second codicil signed on the 24th day of June 1882 arranges more clearly how the legacies are to be paid out to James, Andrew and Harriett.  Henry evidently chose not to accept theDrumcrow farm and although he came home for his father's funeral left for America where he lived in Philadelphia.  The Drumcrow farm went to  daughter Harriett Lowry who married John Hamilton Craig about 1884 and is currently in the Craig family.  ! According to Henry Alexander Lowry's will he had an Uncle George to whom he owed a debt of Three Hundred Pounds. A cousin, Andrew Lowry, of Feddyglass was named executor of the will.   Also, in the will, he made allowances for his sister Eliza.

  • Notes for HENRY ALEXANDER LOWRY:
    Lightly written on the cover of the 1835 Lease between John Lowry of Drumcrow and James, Marquis of Abercorn is " Now Henry" and another date of 2 January 1846, Lifford.  This may be when   Henry A. Lowry became the tenant at Drumcrow after the death of his mother, Elizabeth in October 1845.
    
    Henry A.  Lowry farmed the lands at Drumcrow which were in the Lowry family since the 1600s.  He was known as a very "knowledgeable man" and his advice and counsel was often sought after and freely given to the local farming community.  His brother, the Reverend Andrew Lowry, MA was Minister of Ballyshannon Presbyterian Church - ordained in 1842 and served there until 1903.  I understand there is a plaque or monument in Ballyshannon recognizing his good work in the area during the time of his ministry.  Henry Lowry married Mary McFadden around the early 1850s and had one daughter, Harriet, [Grandmother] and four sons, John, Andrew, James and Henry.  In fact I keep in close touch with Henry's Granddaughter, Margaret Fish who lives in Arizona.  The latter three emigrated to America where they all prospered in the various businesses they had established.  John emigrated to Australia.  Henry A. Lowry was I understand buried in St. Johnstone.  Grandmother, Harriet Lowry Crai! g, was educated at a private boarding school in Coleraine.  She was a very talented artist and pianist.  One of ther many crayon portraits can be seen at my sister, Mabel's home in Strabane.----Written about 1950 -Frederick James Craig White, Co.     There are only some very recent Lowry gravestones at St. Johnston Presbyterian Church but there is family lore (from John Shields, an old family retainer, who died about 10 years ago) to suggest that a headstone was made but never erected for Henry Lowry and may itself be buried at the threshold of the hay threshing barn at Drumcrow.--Boyd Gray, 2003
