Charles was born in 1853 in Tullyrap, Taughboyne Pa., Co. Donegal, Ireland and his baptism took place on November 20th, 1853.  Charles' father was Alexander Hamilton (Tullyrap) Lowry and his mother was Anne (Nancy) McCullogh/McCauley.  His paternal grandparents were Gawin (Tullyrap) Lowry and <Unknown>.  He had three brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Andrew, Alexander, Alexander, Catherine, Martha, Anne and <Unknown>.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
