  • Abercorn Letters: April 12, 1767- August 1771 refer to  Alex and brother James trying to help their older brother Andrew of Drumbeg, leases for Thomas, Alexander and James, and cutting trees in Feddyglass.

    Description :    Sir John James Burgoyne, Strabane, to [Marquess of Abercorn, London]Concerning settlement of properties of the Lowry family of Phed[d]yglass.   'On
    reference to your Lordship's books I find that Robert Lowry applied on 25th July 1811 claiming a right to the farm in Phed[d]yglass but the farm being then in lease, your Lordship could not hear his claim. The farm was set for only 7 years and the lease expired at November last.I have had the parties in, and enquired into the facts. Alexander Lowry brother to Robert died leaving a widow and two children. Andrew Lowry married the widow about 6 years ago. One child was then living which is since dead. The widow has had two sons and a daughter by her second marriage.Andrew Lowry on his marriage removed to Phed[d]yglass and sold the half of 'Drumcroe' to his son John who had the other half of it.I enclose Robert's affidavit. He says his mother's freedom has been very ill paid, and on calling on John to restore the article he says he destroyed it. Robert is an innkeeper in Raphoe and Andrew who is married to the widow has always been a punctual tenant. I therefore think if your Lordship allowed the widow's freedom to be made good to her, with a compensation for the deficiency of former years, it would be as much
    as her family could claim, as Robert has lived so long off the estate.'
