  • We have found a death record for an Alexander Lowry, Sept 25, 1873 of Raphoe, Raphoe Parish.  Present at Death was Thomas Hayes.  This is the Alexander Lowry who is Sarah Lowry Hayes' father.  It is not clear if this is my Alexander Lowry.  According to the GVRB's of 1861-76 he was living in Feddyglass.
    
    
    130105:  Death entry shows Alexander Lowry, widower, aged 84, labourer of Raphoe, died of "Old Age" after 3 months, PAD being Thomas Hayes.  This would seem to make Sarah Lowry Hayes his daughter.  Did she return from America to look after him as she was in Philly in the 1860 census, and did she then marry Thomas Hayes of Raphoe?  Number 6 Irish Row, where he died if it is him, is hard to find because the houses are not numbered.
    No death notice found in Derry Standard.

    Church Records:
    No record of Alexander Lowry and Sarah Stevenson's marriage has been found.
    Recorded Baptisms of their sons, Andrew (1820) and Alexander (1826) are in Taughboyne Parish Church register. There is no record of son John Lowry's baptism (b abt. 1823) in these records.
    Their daughter Eliza has a recorded baptism in St. Eunans Church of Ireland, Raphoe, Co. Donegal on 11 January 1829.  She is their only child recorded in these records.
    There is no record of son John Lowry's baptism  in these records which start about 1774, although very  few before 1800.
    Their daughter Margaret has a recorded baptism in 1st Raphoe Presbyterian Church, Raphoe, Co. Donegal on 12 March 1834.  She was born 15 Feb 1834.  They are recorded as being from Drumfraw.
    We have not found a recorded baptism for my direct ancestor, Martha Lowry, born about 1830-31. Nor have we found one for Henry Lowry, the youngest son born in 1842

    Griffiths Valuation: 1857, He is not listed in Drumcrow.  3  Alexander Lowrys are recorded in Feddyglass, Tullyrap and Carnshannagh.

    GVRB 2: Bet. 1866 - 1876, Alexander Lowry/Feddyglass
    GVRB 3: Bet. 1880 - 1895, His name has been scored through and replace with David Donnell

    Londonderry Standard: 1873, no ref to his death

    Because Thomas Hayes' wife,Sarah Lowry, gave her address as Tully instead of Feddy when she got
    married, we could never be sure that this Alexander was your Alexander. This doubt was emphasised by the fact that the GVRBs seemed to show that your Alex was apparently still living in Feddy in 1895.  It was
    essential to prove that he was NOT in Feddy in 1895, or he could not be dying in Raphoe in 1873.  That is why it is important that we can attribute the date of 1895 in
    the Feddy GVRBs to the appearance of the two houses, where there used to be only one, and not to the deletion of Alexander Lowry's name.  The same obviously applies to any other date we can attribute to Alex's disappearance.  Which is why I was going to such lengths to show he
    might well have been gone even before the 1876 changes to the previous GVRB. In other words, if your Alex is NOT in Feddy after 1873, then it is almost certain that this death certificate is his.  This means that the Sarah Lowry who gave her address as Tully when she got married is
    almost certainly the Sarah who immigrated to America but disappeared in 1860. And finally, this means that either the marriage cert is wrong and she was NOT in Tully, OR, that there was a closer link between the two Alexanders in Feddy and Tully than we think.  Actually, it would probably mean a closer link between your Alex and the other Alex's
    father, Gavin Lowry.  It also means, of course, that your Alex's son, Alex, now does not need to be still alive and living in his father's hovel in Feddy.  He was probably long dead which is why we never hear from him again after his birth in 1826.  ----Boyd Gray comments April 2006
