John's father was Thomas Hayes and his mother was Sarah S Lowry. His maternal grandparents were Alexander Lowry and Sarah Stevenson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, Henry, Sarah, Female, Andrew and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 85 on December 27th, 1952. His burial was in St. Eunans Cathedral, Raphoe, Co. Donegal, Ireland.
