Henry's father was Thomas Hayes and his mother was Sarah S Lowry. His maternal grandparents were Alexander Lowry and Sarah Stevenson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, John, Alexander, Sarah, Female, Andrew and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the eight children.
