Stewart was born on February 11th, 1827 in Lislea, Kilrea Pa. and his baptism took place on February 18th, 1827 in 1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church, Kilrea Pa..1   Stewart's father was George Gordon and his mother was Jane Stewart.  His maternal grandparents were James Stewart and Catherine Stewart.  He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Archibald, Archibald, Hugh, William, Jane, Catherine and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
