Catherine was born in 1839 in Lislea, Kilrea Pa., Co. Londonderry, Ireland and her baptism took place on March 29th, 1839 in 1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church, Kilrea Pa..1   Catherine's father was George Gordon and her mother was Jane Stewart.  Her maternal grandparents were James Stewart and Catherine Stewart.  She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Stewart, Archibald, Archibald, Hugh, William, Jane and Maria.  She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
