Robert was born in 1854.  Robert's father was Samuel Bolton and his mother was Mary Gray.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Bolton and Martha Boyd.  He had six brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, William, James, John, Hugh Walker, Henry, Infant and Matilda.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
