He was the son of Hugh de Courtenay, 4th Earl of Devon. He married Lady Margaret Beaufort, daughter of Sir John de Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset and Lady Margaret de Holand, after 1421.
He died on 3 February 1458 in Abingdon Abbey, Abingdon, Berkshire, England.
