Her paternal grandparents were Sir Hugh De Courtenay and Maud De Beaumont; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Carminow and Jane Hill. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Edward (8th Earl of Devon), Walter, Isabell, Florence, Florence, Isabel and Maud. She was the second oldest of the eight children.
