Richard was born in year 1008 in St. Valery-en-Caux, Normandy, France.1 Richard's father was Gulbert de Saint Valery and his mother was Pappia Normandy.  His paternal grandparents were Bernard de Saint Valery and Emma de Saint Valery; his maternal grandparents were  Duke of Normandy Richard (San Peur, The Fearless) Normandy I and  <Unknown>.  He was the youngest of two children.  He had a brother named Bernarad.
