Rudolph was born in year 0970.1 Rudolph's father was Duke, King of Arles Conrad of Burgundy I and his mother was Matilda de France.  His paternal grandparents were Duke, King of Italy Rudolph of Burgundy III and Bertha of Swabia; his maternal grandparents were  Kng Louis of France IV and  Gerberga of Saxony.  He was the third of six children.  He had five sisters named Gisele, Gerberga, Bertha, Adelaide and Matilda.
