Maud was born in year 1130 in Gower, Glamorganshire, Wales.1 Maud's father was Sheriff of Hereford, Lord Bramber William de Braose II and her mother was Bertha de Gloucester de Pitres.  Her paternal grandparents were Philip (Crusader) de Braose and Aenor de Totnes; her maternal grandparents were  3rd Earl of Hereford Miles de Pietres de Gloucester and  Sybil de Neufmarche.  She was the oldest of five children.  She had a brother and three sisters, named The Ogre of Abergavenny, Matilda, Sybil and Bertha.
