John's father was Samuel Bugg and his mother was Sarah Bacon.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Bugg Jr. and Deborah Sherwood; his maternal grandparents were  Capt. Edmund Bacon and  Ann Lyddall.  He was the third of nine children.  He had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Anelm, Sherwood, Jacob, Edmund, Ruth, Sarah and Agnes.

They had four sons named John, Sherwood, Benjamin and Jesse.
