Note:
SAYER DE SUTTON, son and heir. In 1201 he was a party to a pleaof dower brought by Beatrice de Sutton and her husband Williamde Kadenay. In 1208 he was vouched by the prior of Hedon towarrant land in Ganstead; and in 1210-11 by fine exchanged withWalter de Ver land in Sproatley for other land in Sproatley andin Goxhill, Lincs. In 1212 and 1214 he was a knight, and in 1213and 1214 was sued for dower in Goxhill and Sproatley. In 1215/6he and all his men had letters of safe-conduct to go to G. deNevill, and he made fine to have the king's grace and good will,and delivered his brother Robert as a hostage. On 25 October1217 the sheriff of Yorks was notified that he had come into theking's fealty and service. About this time, a dispute arosebetween him and the monks of Meaux with regard to rights in WestMarsh, which gave rise to considerable violence, and was settledby arbitrators appointed by the Pope on 12 October 1218. In1224, 1237 and 1242 he was in commissions. In 1226-27 he wasbailiff of the port of Hull, and in that capacity was directedon January 3 1226/7 to free a captured French ship. In May 1230he was one of the wardens of the ports and coasts of Yorkshire,and in June was directed to release certain ships. In the timeof Michael, Abbot of Meaux, he granted to his eldest son Amandsubstantial lands in Sutton. Amand, however, entered the Abbeyas a novice and there died. The monks produced a charter ofAmand, witnessed by William, Count of Aumale, giving to theAbbey with his body the land in question, with other lands.Disputes followed, in the course of which the monks killed oneof Sayer's serfs; but, after legal proceedings had been begun, acompromise was reached. After Easter 1246 he recovered by fineagainst the Archbishop of York the advowson of the chapel ofSutton. There is no record of his marriage or of the date of hisdeath (d).
