Note: SIR GILBERT DE GAUNT, of Folkingham, Skendleby, Heckington,Edenham, and Barton-on-Humber, co. Lincoln, and Healaugh, co.York, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir. of Sir Gilbert DEGAUNT, of the same (who died shortly before 22 January 1241/2).The King took his homage, and he had livery of his father'slands, 23 February 1241/2. He was on the King's service in Walesin 1257. On 22 June 1258 he was appointed, by the counsel of theMagnates, Constable of Scarborough Castle: reappointed, fortwelve years, 29 March 1259: he was ordered to deliver thecastle to Hugh le Bigod, 19 May 1260. He was summoned forMilitary Service from 15 May 1244 to 6 March 1263/4, and toParliament, 24 December 1264, by writs directed Gilberto deGaunt. Taking part with the Barons, he escaped capture atNorthampton, 5-6 April 1264, but was taken prisoner at thesurrender of Kenilworth Castle, 13 December 1266. His lands wereforfeited, and given to Henry, son of Richard, King of Almain:he was pardoned, 15 September 1268, and redeemed his lands for3,000 marks. He died at Folkingham, 5 January 1273/4, and wasburied in Bridlington Priory. [Complete Peerage V:625,(transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
