1st Earl Robert de Ferrers

Robert was born about 1062 in Ferrers, Derbyshire, England and his christening took place in Charterley, Staffordshire, England.¹²

Birth Notes

Robert's father was Henry de Ferrers and his mother was Bertha de l' Aigle. His paternal grandparents were Walchelin de Ferrers and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Engenulph de l' Aigle and Richeride. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Engenulf, Amice, Emmeline and Gundreda. He was the oldest of the six children. He died in 1139 in Charterley, Staffordshire, England.

  Robert de Ferrers, having contributed, at the head of the Derbyshire men, to King Stephen's victory over King David of Scotland at Northallerton (commonly called the battle of the Standard), was created by that monarch Earl of Derby. By Hawise his wife, he had William who d. s. p.; Robert his successor; Walcheline, of Okeham; Isolda, m. to Stephen de Beauchamp; and Maud, m. to Bertram de Verdon. The earl d. in 1139 and was s. by his son, Robert de Ferrers, as 2nd Earl of Derby.
