Gruffydd was born in 1081 in Brecknock Castle, Carmarthenshire, Wales.1   Gruffydd's father was King Rhys ap Tewdwr and his mother was Gladys verch Rhywallon.  His paternal grandparents were Prince of Wales Tewdwr (Mawr, The Great) ap Cadell and Gwenllian ferch Gwyn; his maternal grandparents were Prince of Powys Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Tewdwr, Hywel, Llywelyn, Nest, Gwenllian, Margred, Gwladus, Efa and Arden. He had six half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Geraldus, William, Walter, Robert, Maurice, Reinal, Margred, Hawise and Delicia.  He died at the age of 76 in 1157 in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.1
