Rhys was born in 1132 in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.1   Rhys' father was King of Wales Gruffydd ap Rhys and his mother was Gwenllian verch Gruffydd.  His paternal grandparents were King Rhys ap Tewdwr and Gladys verch Rhywallon; his maternal grandparents were King of Gwynedd Gruffydd ap Cynan and Angharad verch Owain. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Gruffyd, Morgan, Maelgwyn, Cadell, Anarawd, Owain, Maredudd, Gwladys and Nesta.  He was the youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 65 on April 28th, 1197 in Ireland.2
