Owain was born about 1100 in Aberffraw Castle, Angelesey, Wales.1   Owain's father was King of Gwynedd Gruffydd ap Cynan and his mother was Angharad verch Owain.  His paternal grandparents were Prince of North Wales Cynan ap Iago and Rhanullt O'Olaf; his maternal grandparents were Owain (Vradwr, The Traitor) Tegaingl ap Edwin and Merfydd verch Goronwy. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Cadwaladr, Cadwallon, Margred, Rhanullt, Gwenllian, Elen, Merinedd and Susanna.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died in December 1169 in Carnarvonshire, Wales.  His burial was in Bangor Cathedral, Is Gwyrfai, Caernavonshire, Wales.2 1
