Hugh was born in 1147 in Kevelioc, Monmouth, England.1   Hugh's father was Ranulf Le Meschines IV and his mother was Maud De Caen.  His paternal grandparents were Earl of Chester Ranulph (de Briquessart) de Meschines III and Countess of Chester Lucia Taillebois; his maternal grandparents were 1st Earl of Gloucester Robert (The Consul) of Caen and Mabel (Maud) Fitzhammon. He had a brother and four sisters, named Richard, Alice, Beatrix, Joanna and Isabel.  He was the second youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 34 on June 30th, 1181 in Leeke, Stafford, England.  He was buried in Chester, Chestershire, England.2 1
