Margaret's father was Richard de Assheton and her mother was Elizabeth Talbot. Her paternal grandparents were Ralph de Assheton and Margaret Barton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Edmund, Alice, Dorothy and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the six children.
