Martha Jane was born in 1837 in Redwater, Bowie Co, Texas, USA. Martha Jane's father was Collin McKinney Akin and her mother was Lucinda J Watson. Her paternal grandparents were William (Bill) Collin Akin and Rebecca (Becky) McKinney. She had three brothers and two sisters, named David, William, John Watson, Mary Jane and Nancy Ann. She was the second oldest of the six children. She had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named James Franklin, Collin McKinney, William C, Robert Jackson, Richard, Mattie, Rebecca Elizabeth, Emma and Ellie.-
