John R. was born in 1827 in Caswell Co, NC.1   John R.'s father was Elijah Roberts and his mother was Rebecca B. Davis.  His paternal grandparents were Leavin Roberts and Nancy Carrell. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James L., Jerome B. J., Elijah Hanville, William Anderson, Elizabeth Poteat and Ann Poteat.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 53 in 1880.1
