Sophia J. was born in 1843 in Carroll Co, TN.  Sophia J.'s father was Rev. Elijah Henry Autry and her mother was Mary Louise Parish.  Her maternal grandparents were John Sihon Parish and Celia Roberts. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Infant, Infant, David Angus, Tyce, Samuel Walter, Felix, Elijah William, Infant, Eliza Anne, Mary Emily and Martha.  She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
