Event Note

George was a Lieutenant in the Union Army during the Civil War; in thePatton Cavalry Company, which was assigned in 1862-1864 to the 22ndRegiment of the Pennsylvania Cavalry, organized as Company F in theRinggold Battalion of the Volunteer Cavalry. The company was musteredinto service on 14 Oct 1862 near Wheeling, WV. A second muster in rollcall on 4 June 1863 shows George was a 2nd Lieutenant in "E" Companyof the Ringgold Battalion, and reports his age as 49 years old. In theJuly and August muster roll he was reported in Libby Prison, locatedin Richmond, VA. He was captured at Harpers Ferry, VA on 14 July1863. He was sent from Libby Prison to Dansville, VA in May 1864 andthen to Mason, GA in July 1864. He was paroled at Savannah, GA on 30Nov 1864, and reported to Camp Parole, MD. The September and October1863 muster reports that he was dishonorably discharged by order ofthe President on 21 Sept 1863 for being absent without leave and fordrunkenness. A special order from the War Department revoked the 1863discharge on 29 Jan 1867 and granted an honorable discharge. Hismuster out roll dated 19 July 1865 was at New Creek, WV. A secondPrivate George T. Hammond Jr. was also listed in the same company. APrivate George Hammond was also in Company A of the 6th Regiment ofthe Pennsylvania Militia mustered in Harrisburg. A note in hismilitary file dated 08 July 1892 reports that no muster out will wasmade, perhaps requested by the family in settling the estate.

George kept a family Bible in which he signed and recorded the births,marriages and deaths of his family. Published in 1845 in Hartford,this Bible has been passed down through the generations, and since1979, has been in the possession of Wayne Hammond, Jr.
