HISTORY OF RICHMOND
by S.P. Warren article fifth
(this is a very long piece , I will only type paragraphs concerning Horace Cadwell )
In the fall of 1822 Horace Cadwell, with his family moved from Farmington, Hartford county, Conn. His family consisted of a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters. They moved with two one-horse wagons, bringing all their goods with them. They were six weeks on the road, his wife and children on foot most of the way. he stopped in Andover the first winter, and the next spring took a farm of John Wilson of Pierpont; the same farm which is now owned and occupied by the heirs of Anson Leonard, where he staid one year. While their he found some land which suited him, on lot 62, in the southeast corner of No. 10, adjoining David Prindle's, owned by Apollo Cook, of Catskill, New York. After some inquiry he found the agent,Levi Gaylord, of Geneva; at that time County Auditor. With him he contracted for 104 acres of land at $ 3.00 per acre. He, like most of the new settlers had not a dollar to pay down, and a family to support in the bargain, with all the advantages now before us. It looked hard then, but we had to stand it. I say we, for my lot was cast among the many pioneers that settled in this wilderness country.
In the spring of 1824 Horace Cadwell built a log house and moved , with his family, onto his new farm in No.10.
........Horace Cadwell, with the help of his two sons, Horace and Timothy, succeeded in clearing up and paying for their farm, which he bought under such destitute circumstances.- He was a very industrious farmer. He built a frame barn but lived in the old log house many years. His wife became sickly and lived in that condition a few years and then died, after which he gave up business to his oldest son Horace, who built a good, comfortable frame house , in whichhis father lived and died at the age of 75 years. His son Harris, and family live on the old homestead. His second son Timothy, lives on the northwest corner of lot 79, formerly owned by Richard Bennett, who died many years ago. His oldest daughter Eliza and youngest daughter, Maria, died many years ago. They were likely Christian women. His second daughter Sally Ann is the wife of William Crockett and lives in Dorset.
The first settlers in Padanarum had to go six or seven miles through the woods to the mill, which was in what is now Espyville. But few of the settlers had a team of any kind. They lived on cornbread mostly, and the trouble was to get to the mill. Poverty is the mother of invention. There were 5 or 6 boys in the settlement, from 12 to 15 years of age, and they would all get a half bushel of shelled corn apiece, in a bag, and away they would go through the woods to mill. They had to perform this duty once a week. Three of those boys, now gray-haired old men, are still living in Padanarum. Their names are Horace and Timothy Cadwell and J.F. Bright.
