Narrative

This is the most well-known graveyard in the Historic Triangle. It is located at the corner of Duke of Gloucester Steet and the Palace Green. The church itself was built in 1715. Bruton Parish was formed in 1674, and the first brick church built there in 1683. It was slightly northwest of the current church, and there are 4 small concrete markers in the cemetery that show where the four corners of that building were. One of the earliest markers in the churchyard dates to 1678, although nobody really knows the date of the first burial, or indeed even how many people are buried here.

These photos show how people have been buried right up to the walls of the church, on all sides. In fact, the whole churchyard is said to be completely full of burials, although most markers have not survived the years. The burials were so random and unorganized that at times people were buried on top of one another.
