Narrative

Aquia Episcopal Church is the oldest active church in Stafford County. It is located on the northeast corner at the intersection of US Route #1 and Garrisonville Road (State Route #610.) Catharine Miller was extremely helpful in identifying the people buried here. The Story of Aquia Church by Thomas M. Moncure, Jr. and Molly A. Pynn gives the history of the church and is recommended for those who want to learn more about Aquia Church. On April 3, 1667, the Stafford County Court ordered "that the minister preach in three particular places in this county." One of those places was on the south side of Aquia Creek and was undoubtedly near the present church building. The present day church building was built in 1751, destroyed by fire in 1754, and rebuilt in 1757.Hannah Maines, William W. Robertson, and Eleanor Robertson were the first persons to be actually buried in the Aquia Church Cemetery. John Moncure and his wife, Frances Brown Moncure, were buried under the chancel at the time of their death. His son, John Moncure II, and his wife, Anne Conway Moncure, along with others were moved from "Windsor Forest" to the chancel crypt just after the Civil War.
John Peyton, Anne Waye Peyton, Elizabeth Rowzee Peyton, and Eliza Peyton were moved from "Stony Hill", the Peyton home, to Aquia Church Cemetery around 1936. In July 1943, the graveyard from Alexander Scott's home, "Dipple" (on the Potomac River just south of Choppawamsic Creek) was moved to the Aquia Church Cemetery when the area was annexed by the U.S. Marine Corps. The "Somerset" graveyard (52 graves) was moved to Aquia Church Cemetery about the same time. "Somerset" was the home of the first John Moncure. Margaret Hedgman was moved from "Rose Hill" (near Marlborough Point) to Aquia Church Cemetery in 1943. Mauell Norman was moved from near Ramoth Church to Aquia Church Cemetery in 1967.

The oldest tombstones in the cemetery are those of Elizabeth Simson and Mary Fletcher and were moved to Aquia Church Cemetery
