"Rocketts" built by Captain Thomas Price in 1735, the same year as the Fork
Church, by the same masons & carpenters and using many of the same
materials. In Hanover County, next door (in country-speak) to Scotchtown.
Captain Thomas Price was the son of Mary Randolph & John Price. He married
Barbara Winston. It was a post office during the Revolution and the site of
many skirmishes. Gen. Lafayette was staying there when Cornwallis
approached, but fled before Cornwallis arrived. During the Civil War Gen.
Stonewall Jackson and his troops were quartered there for a short while.
The description I have says it is 12 rooms, each 25 x 25 feet, the brick
walls are nearly 2 feet thick. Two stories in the front, 3 stories in the
back becasue of the hill. all nails are handmade.
Rocketts was later owned by Polish nobleman Dr. Czeslaw Lukaszkiewicz,
married to a granddaughter of Capt. Price, and he bought Rocketts in 1936,
restored it and lived there for awhile. In the 1980's it was the home of Ed
Stevens & the thoroughbred race horses he raised & trained there. I'm
embarrassed to say I don't know who owns it now. (Embarrassed because Capt.
Price was my g-g-g-grandfather and I love Rocketts -- wish it had passed in
my direction.)
Nowadays it's called Rocketts Mill -- there's an old mill at the foot of the
hill on New Found River.
