Mott Doniphan
Mott Doniphan, Gentleman, (16??-circa 1776) was the second son of Captain Alexander Doniphan (circa 1653-1717) of Richmond County and Margaret Mott, his wife. He married Rosanna Anderson, daughter of Captain George Anderson and Mary Matthews, his wife, of Potomac Creek, Stafford County, and in right of his wife came into possession of a large landed estate in Overwharton Parish. His family has been detailed in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volume 26, pages 274-285 and Volume 28, pages 226-238. Mott Doniphan, Gentleman, was the great-great-great-great grandfather of President Harry Ship Truman.
Rosanna (Anderson) Doniphan was the only child of Captain George Anderson, who was sheriff of Stafford County 1709-1710 and a gentleman justice in 1714, and his wife nee Mary Matthews was the daughter of John Matthews, an early inhabitant of the Potomac Creek neighborhood; he received a grant from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck for 2,466 acres on Little Hunting Creek in 1694.
