Narrative

Carter Henry
Harrison of “Clifton” in Cumberland County 9 November 1760.
He petitioned the House of Delegates from Cumberland County in 1780
to reject a bill forbidding the use of depreciated currency in payment
of debts.
He was in the French and Indian War and in the militia during the
Revolution, a vestryman of Southam Parish until his resignation
(1765-1769), and a land processioner in 1771. The Southam Parish
Vestry permitted Carter Harrison and Nicholas Davies to build an
addition on the north side of Ham Chapel for the use of their families
in 1760.
Carter Harrison served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1782-87).
The Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography devotes a topic to Harriso
Carter, who was head of a household of 20 whites and 136 blacks in
Cumberland County in 1782, left a will in Cumberland County
(will dated 8 Oct. 1793, recorded 27 Jan. 1794).
