Barbara was born in July 1900.  Barbara's father was Bertram (Bertie) Cartland and her mother was Mary Hamilton (Polly) Scobell.  Her paternal grandparents were James Cartland and Flora; her maternal grandparents were George Scobell and Edith Palairet. She had two brothers and a sister, named Ronald, Anthony (Tony) and Cartland.
