Living's father was Henry Melvin Back and his mother was Martha Witt. His paternal grandparents were James S. Back and Elizabeth Roberts; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Witt and Elizabeth Campbell. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Vadis, Raymond, Melvin Henry, Ermin, Living, Alfred W., Living, Lola Faye and Living. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Carl, Homer and Arlie.-
