Abbia was born in 1830 in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Abbia's father was William Story Sargent and her mother is Hannah Stinson. Her paternal grandfather was Benjamin Sargent and her paternal grandmother is Sarah Story. She had a brother and three sisters, named William, Sarah E., Mary and Cornelia. She is the oldest of the five children.-
