His paternal grandparents were Jr. Morgan David and Polly Andres Colby. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Jesse Frances, Millard Landis, Horace Harold Parker, Jr. Morgan Johnson, Helen A., Theresa J., Emily A., Eugenia Esmah and Rufina. He is the second oldest of the ten children.-
