Willaby was born on December 4th, 1838 in Bog District, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Willaby's father was Willoughby Colby and his mother was Betsey Wheeler. His paternal grandparents were James Colby and Susannah Stewart. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Amos, Irad, Lucinda and Betsey Ann. He is the second youngest of the five children. He had four half-brothers named George, Moses, Erie and Irad.-
