Nellie A. was born on July 29th, 1849 in Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Nellie A.'s father was Lorenzo Colby and her mother was Esther Emerson Harvey. Her paternal grandparents were Symmes Sawyer Colby and Louisa Ordway. She had two brothers and a sister, named Ned Alber, Judson Adonirom and Angie Dell. She is the oldest of the four children.-
