James was born on October 27th, 1767 in Bow, Merrimack, New Hampshire. James' father was Willoughby Colby and his mother was Sarah Sargent. His maternal grandparents were Phillip Sargent and Martha Hadley. He had a brother and six sisters, named Philip, Hepsebeth, Sarah, Shirley, Mariam, Judith and Sarah. He was the oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Willoughby and Polly Andres. He was buried in Evans Cemetery, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.-
