Mathew was born in 1340 in Cothelstone Manor, Bath Abbey, Somerset, England. Mathew's father was Geffrey Stowell and his mother was Juliana Gastelin. His paternal grandfather was Gefferie De Stawell and his paternal grandmother is Joan De Columbaris; his maternal grandfather is Walter Gastelin. He was an only child. He died at the age of 39 in 1379.-
