Walter was born in 1160 in Ewias Lacy, , Herefordshire, England. Walter's father was Hugh De Lacy and his mother was Rohesia De Clare. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert De Lacy and Agnes De Lacy; his maternal grandparents were Gilbert Fitzrichard De Clare and Adeliza De Clermont. He was an only child. He died at the age of 81 on February 24th, 1241 in , Leinster, Dublin, Ireland.-
